More about the DevEdge Sidebar Reborn

Or whatever you wish to call it ;-)

Setup a mirror

If you want to setup a mirror, either locally or on Internet, you can download the source.
To add it to the bar, use the javascript window.sidebar.addPanel (BarName, BarAddress, "");
For example, window.sidebar.addPanel("Web development", "http://www.ivanyeung.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/webdev/sidebar/sidebar.html", "");
If you don't know how to add JavaScrip to a page, W3Schools is a great place to learn the basic.
You'll need to change the base address of sidebar.html, otherwise it'll keep loading content from GeoCity.

About the Original DevEdge Sidebar

A long time ago, Netscape setup a site for Netscape developers, which becomes the site known as DevEdge.
It attracted many bright developers, and one of them come up with an idea of a multi-page sidebar.  He then created one by filling it with essential web development reference like HTML or CSS.  It is called the DevEdge Sidebar.
Equiped with more then 10 references, including CSS 2, CSS 2.1, HTML, DOM, DOM 2, etc., It's a great bar that many people used, including me. ^_^

One day, without a notice of any kind or even any hint, DevEdge is down.  Closed.  Vanished without puff of smoke.
The sidebar, being part of the DevEdge site, also disappeared, leaving a big void under the once-proud label 'DevEdge Sidebar'.
It's until then tbhat I realized I can't code website without the bar. T-T (I use notepad replacement)

At first I think it's only a temporary server down.  Sadly, if it was, you won't be reading this page.

The New Sidebar

When I realized it's not temporary, I consulted blogs from other developers.  There is a clear need for the bar.  I need it. Urgently. And I believe many do, too.
So I reconstructed the bar from parts of the DevEdge Sidebar that I rescued from Google cache and WayBackMachine since Netscape shutted down DevEdge, and thus Netscape stills holds the copyright of virtually all of its content.
The DOM2 reference is acquired from RICHDOUGHTY.NET, like the original bar.

This bar is slightly different from the original DevEdge sidebar because Geocity doesn't support xul, so I had to use HTML.
At the end, although the advertisment doesn't show in the sidebar, GeoCity is slow for many people, not to mention the data limit... (sigh)
Fortunately, people are willing to help by setting up mirrors or recreting their own sidebar. :D

Finally...

If you want something added, I will appreciate it if you can point me to a reference page that can be added to the bar without much modification.  Best if it's linked directly to W3C specification.
I've changed the bar so that it loads from my homepage on ISP, which I hope is faster, but is still not permanent.  Can anyone help?

If so, tell me with this form. :)
